THE EFFECT OF SMOKING ON ORAL HYGIENE AND GINGIVAL INFLAMMATION

Abstract
In order to evaluate the effect of smoking on oral hygiene and gingival inflammation, Simplified Oral Hygien Index and Gingival Index of 71 individuals were examined.
These individuals were divided into non-smoker group, smoker group(1-10 cigarettes/day), smoker group(11-20 cigarettes/day). Before scaling, these indexes were examined. One month after scaling, these indexes were examined in the same manners.
The obtained results were as follow
1. Before group. scaling, SOHI of smoker group(11-20 cigarettes/day) was significantly higher than that of non-smoker group.
2. One month after scaling, SOHI of smoker groups were slightly higher than that of non-smoker group, but there was no significant difference.
3. Before scaling, GI of smoker groups were slightly higher than that of non-smoker group, but there was no significant difference.
4. One month after scaling, GI of smoker groups were slightly higher than that of non-smoker group, but there was no significant difference.
5. In the view of response on scaling, the decreasing amounts of SOHI, GI have no significant difference between non-smoker group and smoker groups.
